STATEMENT

I am a maker, a doer, a creator. The process feeds my soul, calms my mind, and stretches my body. It is what I believe I was made to do while on this earth, what I need to do to manage in our chaotic world. I have been blessed with a curious mind and as a child rewarded by my parents for exercising and feeding my curiosity. But this process of making and my ability to see it through keeps me wanting to wake up every day.

I continue to be filled with awe and wonder from the beauty and ugliness of our world and how these two divergent realities coexist. Creating helps all of me manage the disparities between the beauty and ugliness and the exploration involved with creating is a very satisfying distraction from what I call chaos.

As I work in my studio, I use whatever medium fulfills my need at the time, feels right in my hands and pleases my eyes and my sense of smell.  I have used textiles and other fibers, the photographic process and oil painting. There are still more mediums I hope to explore, but, at the moment I am completely entranced with oil paints. They can be very forgiving yet unapologetically powerful. For me oils have a sensuous, passionate quality that can reveal anger or love in one brush stroke, can turn day into night with the slightest addition of pigment and can completely convince me that I never was an artist and never will be one and then a moment later make me feel as if I am the best at my craft.  If through all of this process, what I create awakens something in another person, challenges someone’s thinking or brings them pleasure in any way, then that is utterly amazing for me.

If any or all of this earns me the title of Artist. I will own that with pride. Most of my life I would not call myself an artist. I always thought that selling work or some sort of acknowledgement from outside of myself was necessary to own that title but I believe now that the act alone of creating, making, being, is the artist in all of us, if we choose, and it is what I choose.

BIO

I am an artist, mother and grandmother with studios in Virginia and California. I completed my bachelor’s degree from James Madison University, Harrisonburg, VA and my master’s degree from San Francisco Art Institute, San Francisco, CA. I am very fortunate to have traveled and exhibited internationally, experiencing our world’s beauty and diversity.

Presently I am in the midst of a collaboration with Phyllis Ressler, Food Moments: musings from the Shenandoah Valley. The first stage of this project was recently exhibited at the Arts Council of the Valley in Harrisonburg, VA. The project explores communities and cultures of the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia  through stories and paintings. In May of 2023 I exhibited a solo show of my paintings, Time of Wonder, at Gallery Route One, Pt. Reyes Station, CA. I have also recently exhibited at Arts of Pt Richmond, Faces of Pt Richmond, O’Hanlon Center for the Arts, Call and Response, Arts of Pt. Richmond Annual Juried Summer Exhibition 2023, Gallery Route One Annual Jurried Exhibition 2022, Pt Reyes Station, CA, Las Laguna Art Gallery, Laguna Beach, CA and Arts Council of the Valley Juried Members Exhibit 2022. My textile piece, Grateful Sarees, is in a permanent installation at the Sentara Center for Women’s Health. I have also exhibited internationaly in Bangkok,Thailand, Nairobi, Kenya and Geneva, Switzerland.

have also worked with multiple non-profits as a Board Chair and as a consultant to various Board of Directors. I presently serve as the Board Chair of Black Swan Arts and Media in Oakland, CA. I am an Artist Member at Gallery Route One in Pt. Reyes Station, CA and the Arts Council of the Valley in Harrisonburg, VA. I also served as the interim Head of the Fiber Arts Department at James Madison University, Harrisonburg, VA.

My artistic practice previously focused on textiles, e.g., quilting, weaving, crochet, needlework and photography as my mediums for expression. Recently oil painting has been my main artistic medium. I explore expressionism in both figurative and landscape painting.
